Stupid People
I appreciate (no, really, I do) that not everybody is of equal intelligence. And, I'd go so far as to say, that's probably for the best. But some people are just so dumb, I can't let their stupidity pass without comment.
Take my dear colleagues at WeBuildNetworks. A group of them, today, were talking about how unfair it was that one of them had been fined £60 for travelling at 10mph over the speed limit through the town centre. Yes, at 40mph, through the centre of town. It's unfair, you see, because speed cameras are just there to make money for the Police. Still, I suppose they have a point, speeding is already an expensive hobby. And perfectly safe... a victimless crime obviously.
Oh, and no, none of them voted in the last election, nor could they tell me which parties if any were for or against more speed cameras. Good, eh? I bet they all pay the stupid tax, too.
(For what it's worth, I speed at times. I wouldn't bitch and moan if I got a ticket for it, though.)

I do my best not to speed in urban areas. I do think motorway speed limits are unreasonably low, though.
I don't see any particular reason why the camera system shouldn't be revenue neutral; the points and the increase in insurance premiums ought to be enough penalty anyway.

I suppose I agree about motorway speeds, on the whole; of course, ideally speed limits would be weather and road condition dependent, but that's something of a pipe dream.
As for the camera system being revenue neutral, no, I don't see any reason why it shouldn't be, but why should it be? Who are you (or I) to decide what is "enough" penalty? After all, there are no doubt people who will happily lie to insurers about their penalty points, or even drive without insurance, but who might notice getting slapped with a £60 fine.
