Cake and trains and cleavage and things

Since I last updated this (a whole week ago):

And in fact, I think I'm off there again now. Byee!

Completely unrelated news stories

From BBC News online today:

Well, it made me smile, anyway.

Paging LJ users

I realise many of my few readers (go on, parse that one) read this through syndication on LiveJournal. It would be very cool indeed if those who do could toddle over to this LJ poll and fill it in - it's only a few simple questions, and shouldn't take you long at all.

Unfortunately, LJ's definition of "all" people is "all those with LJ accounts", so those of you who never got drawn in can't join the fun. Sorry. You can view the results, though, so that's OK...

Your scheduled programming now resumes.

[Update: it looks like some of you did this. Thanks!]

Still alive

Just so you know, despite my having not appeared online much lately, I am in fact still alive and well. We have NTL cable now, and wires trailing all over the new house, so things should get better. Unfortunately, my wireless access point appears to have decided to pack in, so not that much better. No IRC from the sofa for me, yet...

In a bid to keep you entertained, here're my current (and recent) open tabs:

Oh, and I hope shortly there'll be a tab with an Open Guide to Nottingham edit form in, while I write up the pubs I've visited this week :) Things seem to have started happening with the Guide, in the last couple of weeks, with a new logo and loads of content from Joe Mills, and a plug on the BBC Nottingham website. Combined with the funky new features in the latest version of the OpenGuides software (which I'll install Real Soon Now), things are looking up!

Hi, I'm Charles Kennedy

So having stumbled across Chris Lightfoot's blog via his much publicised estimation quiz, I figured I'd take a shot at the political survey too. Apparently I'm Charles Kennedy, which seems most unfair.

The analysis of the submissions for the estimation quiz makes for interesting reading — part 1 and part 2 — although I guess you've all read them already, by now...

[update: Someone pointed out politicalcompass.org - I scored Economic Left/Right: -3.62 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.03 on that, which makes me the Dalai Lama. Cool!]

Infamy?

So, apparently this entry is still the second google hit for Parcel Farce. I'd forgotten all about this, until I got the following email (with email addresses removed):

From: Bernie
To: Jimbo
Subject: FW: Parcelforce!

From: TIMOTHY WARDLEY
Sent: 23 July 2004 01:17
To: Bernie
Subject: Parcelforce!

I dont think you'll ever beat this for Parcelforce careful handling
Bernie.....arrived this morning..I'm still in tears!

Best Wishes,

TIM

Attached was a photo.

I don't think I've had an email from a completely unknown (er, as far as I know) person regarding a blog entry, before. I mean, even when I've been giving stuff away... Is this the first step towards fame, fortune and greatness in the blogosphere?

Somehow, I suspect not :)

The pepper-sex love God

Following on from WordCount, there is now a QueryCount to track the searches people make most on WordCount. Warning, this feature contains strong language from the outset.

Me, I'm waiting for the thing that tracks the queries people make most on the query count...

A new era in pointlessness

4GHz CPUs and mobiles with 1.5GB hard disks have apparently been unveiled today.

I'm trying to work out which I see less practical use for.

On sore thumbs

Joel On Software writes some interesting stuff about usability, about the idea of "Social Interfaces." I particularly liked this bit, though:

Even though text messaging has a ghastly user interface, it became extremely popular with the kids. The joke of it is that there's a much better user interface built into every cellphone for human to human communication: this clever thing called "phone calls." You dial a number after which everything you say can be heard by the other person, and vice versa. It's that simple. But it's not as popular in some circles as this awkward system where you break your thumbs typing huge strings of numbers just to say "damn you're hot," because that string of numbers gets you a date, and you would never have the guts to say "damn you're hot" using your larynx.

So damned true :)

GMail invites

Everybody else is doing it, so here goes: I've acquired a bunch more gmail invites, and have no earthly reason to hang onto more than one or two of them. So if you want one (and have somehow managed to not have one yet), comment or something.

(Whoops. This entry was written almost 24 hours ago, but some moron changed the default status to "Draft"...)

I've just listened to my first ever "audioblog" post. It sums up nicely why I've never listened to one before, and why I'm unlikely to again.
