blog.jimbo.org.uk - Comments on Dear NTL

Dear NTL. No, 192.168.100.10 is not a good IP address to give to a customer. Not even for an hour. Please choke to death on a giant bunch of cocks. Lots of love and hugs, James. Update: apparently, this address is what the cable modem provides when it loses touch with NTL. So, they weren't explicitly providing it, they'd just dropped my line. Which I suppose is somewhat less fuckwitted....

That's what your CM gives you when it loses touch with NTL for a while. Rebooting it (by power-cycling) is sometimes a good way to persuade it to have another go.

Rebooting it about a dozen times worked in the end. I was pleasantly surprised to see there's a little note on the top of the CM, suggesting powercycling before calling support, as a way of resolving common problems...

If it happened late at night it was probably scheduled maintenance. I think you can find out about it by reading the appropriate ntl.* newsgroup, though I wouldn't swear to it.

Damn you and your reasonableness! There was indeed a scheduled "brief outage" that morning, between midnight and 6am.

Curses!

FWIW, http://www.ntl-isp.ntl.com/ServiceStatus/ has the relevant information.
